Teaching Approach
My current teaching understanding and approach revolves around letting expressive intent inform the voice through affect. There is freedom and efficiency found in developing healthy function. I work with my students to always go for comfort and pleasure. I am ready with a technical explanation for the students who will benefit, but in my short experience, affect seems to be the best guide. I never want the body to prevent the soul from expressing itself. Because a singer’s musical instrument resides within the body, it closely impacts identity and spirit. As a teacher, I have the privilege and responsibility to work closely with these instruments. And that gets messy.
Within the overarching bubble of “affect” and “pleasure,” I emphasize three things: 1. Alignment 2. Informed, but personal expression and 3. Excellent musicianship. My students are VERY familiar with the six points of balance and the ever-present exercise ball. They know I expect them to know the piece’s story, invent one if there is none, and take ownership of their interpretation. And they will walk away knowing how to perform their music with accuracy and nuance.
